Episode 17 - yuInterview: Ramon Ramirez [Artist, Publisher, and Urban Environment]

Ramon Ramirez was born and raised in Los Angeles, and the urban landscape has tremendously impacted my psyche development. He paints the urban environment not to replicate but to digest and understand the trends and social conditions it generates.

The visual arts allowed Ramon to conduct reconnaissance and interpret his environment. He not only aims to satisfy the internal need for a better understanding of who one is, but Ramon also wanted to convey his observations on the impact of the environment on our aesthetic values and let them evolve into nature and a more significant forum. In analyzing our city (Los Angeles), the realization of multiple authors has become essential to his work. No single entity is responsible for our urban landscape. There are precise forces at work that weave an unintentional aesthetic. This observation has led Ramon to explore using multiple materials to communicate the rich urban texture around us. In his approach, Ramon always starts with an inspiring image; however, he embraces various elements, including gravity, to help manifest the idea, often changing course from the initial intention. As our environment is continuously expanding and contracting, Ramon similarly sees his work in a constant state of flux, aiming to bring a visual understanding to our changing community.
