Episode 2 - Gifted Future Architect - Htet Wathone Aung

Updated: May 3, 2021

Htet Wathone Aung (Tania) is a gifted future architect from Burma. She hopes to pursue her dream in the United States with drawings and sketches. Architecture is a perfect match for her dream, and Tania is currently taking classes at East Los Angeles College (ELAC).

This week, we had a wonderful conversation with Tania and hoped to learn more about the challenges of her architectural education. Tania was also accepted by two universities: California Institute of Technology (CPP) and California Baptist University (CBU). If you have any suggestions for Tania, please leave a message below.

Challenge 1 - Financial supports

The challenging financial crisis facing my country prevented me from getting tuition fees, so I could only apply to the university to provide more tuition assistant without paying a lot of tuition fees.

Challenge 2 - Limited knowledge of the education system

So, you know, as an international student I'm sure you would understand when you came here, you don't know. What classes I have to take. I am not familiar with the system with the school system and how it works, so I would only take English and math to start my education in the United States.

Challenge 3 - Accent

People here make fun of me for having an English accent, so I try to adjust. I had to adjust it for like all these five years, and I have to practice, every day, looking at the mirror and be like, okay talk likes American not like English-English.

Tania's fun factors are that she chose the United States because Elac's mascot is husky, and she likes dogs. She likes everything about Elac's architecture department, and the best part is when we have a Thanksgiving potluck. It's fun, and she has to meet almost everyone in the department and get to eat their food.

Tania's introduction:

My name is Htet Wathone Aung (Tania), and I am an international student from Burma (Myanmar). I will graduate from East Los Angeles College with AA degrees and transfer to Cal Poly Pomona in Fall 2021. I went to ELAC because of their husky mascot, as I am a huge dog lover but little did I know. ELAC has excellent architecture courses which will get you into your dream schools. All the professors and staff are willing to help you in any possible way they can. I started studying architecture at ELAC in 2016, and I have taken all the courses from the architecture department. ELAC's professors will not let you down in giving you the necessary knowledge and preparation you will need to move onto the next step.
